Tokyo, October 9, 2025 — A “Southern Mongolia Forum” was held at the House of Representatives’ First Members’ Office Building in Tokyo, focusing on the history and current repression in China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The event featured testimonies from activists and representatives of various organizations, including the Dalai Lama’s Japan office, Hong Kong democracy advocates, the Japan Uyghur Association, and the Asia Free Democracy Alliance.

Japan’s new Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) president Sanae Takaichi sent a message of solidarity to the forum, condemning the Chinese Communist Party’s ongoing suppression in Southern Mongolia and stressing the importance of raising public awareness about the issue in Japan.

In response, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a press briefing on October 10, strongly criticizing Japan’s involvement as “interference in China’s internal affairs.” Beijing accused Tokyo of “politicizing and weaponizing human rights issues” to hinder China’s development.

The article’s author, Kota Miura, also reflected on the potential political implications for Japan’s ruling coalition. He noted growing calls from within the Komeito Party—the LDP’s coalition partner—to reassess its alliance with the LDP following electoral setbacks. However, he cautioned against drawing a direct link between this human rights forum and the possible end of the coalition government.

Miura further criticized the imbalance in Japanese media coverage, observing that aside from the Sankei Shimbun and Yomiuri Shimbun, most outlets failed to report on the forum. He argued that while Chinese protests against Japan are widely reported, the voices of those suffering under repression in Southern Mongolia receive far less attention.

The author concluded by highlighting Takaichi’s longstanding advocacy on the issue of Mongolian rights and encouraged readers to watch her YouTube discussions for a deeper understanding of her stance on China’s human rights violations.

Message from Sanae Takaichi
Member of the House of Representatives
Chairperson, Parliamentary League for Supporting Southern Mongolia

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary commemorating the movement for freedom and independence against the oppression of Southern Mongolia by the Chinese Communist Party, I would like to extend my heartfelt greetings.

Looking back on history, countless Mongolian people have continued their struggle—often at the cost of unimaginable hardships and sacrifices—to protect their language, history, culture, and values, and to uphold the pride of their nation.

Even today, the repression carried out by the Chinese Communist Party in Southern Mongolia continues, and I cannot suppress my deep indignation toward this situation. Although there may be limits to what we in Japan can do in the face of such intolerable human rights violations, we must not remain silent.

Together with all of you, we can raise our voices so that as many people as possible, regardless of race or nationality, may become aware of this issue and take an interest in it.

Let us strengthen our solidarity to defend the universal values we share: freedom, the rule of law, and fundamental human rights.

The members of the Parliamentary League for Supporting Southern Mongolia and I will continue to work alongside all of you, with the sincere hope that the path to freedom and happiness for the people of Southern Mongolia will open, leading to a bright and prosperous future.
