"This year's Nobel Literature Prize-winning work (The
Vegetarian, by Han Kang) is filled with disgusting pornography and fabricated history.", says many South Korean conservatives and North Korean defectors.

Many Koreans are not welcoming this as "the first Korean to win the Nobel Literature Prize." Rather, many are feeling ashamed and angry at the decision.

Countless Korean parents are calling her book "disgusting pornography" and "a distorted, delusional, and false history that seriously twists the truth." They are also saying, "We will never let our children read the book of a Nobel Literature Prize-winning author.“

They are deeply outraged. In particular, her interpretation of the extremely sensitive 1980 Gwangju 5.18 Uprising in Korea has enraged numerous Korean intellectuals and citizens who respect the truth.

Some Korean media outlets are raising doubts about the background of this year's Nobel Literature Prize decision, as well as the decision to award former President Kim Dae-jung the Nobel Peace Prize in the past.

They point out that there is no mention of the highly sensitive issues of "North Korean human rights" and "the tragedy of North Korean female defectors in China", which are critical topics on the Korean Peninsula.

Korean conservatives and most North Korean defectors are convinced that these individuals reject the free Republic of Korea and hold a historical perspective aligned with North Korea.

"A novel is just a novel"—this claim hardly applies to a novel awarded the Nobel Prize. More than half of Koreans also have suspicions about former President Kim Dae-jung's Nobel Peace Prize.

They say, "The truth cannot be hidden forever.”

The Korean conservative civic group "Taegukgi Revolution People’s Movement Headquarters (Rep. Min Jung Hong, Taegukgi means the national flag of Korea)" held a press conference in front of the Swedish Embassy in Seoul on October 14, 2024, to protest this year’s Nobel Literature Prize.

This wave of anger is expected to persist in South Korea.
