July 27, 2023, marks the 70th anniversary of the truce for the Korean War.
North Korean authorities are featuring war veterans in their drive to inspire the public about the “Victory Day” parade on July 27 and other events glorifying the victory in the Korean War from 1950-1953. But the elderly generation of war veterans has something else in mind.

According to the Freedom Chosun sources inside North Korea, Rodong Party Propaganda Department distributed (on 6/30/2023) lecture material entitled, “Let’s Move Forward By Honoring the Endless Dedication for Fatherland and Heroic Sacrifice the War Veterans Have Shown Us!” The Propaganda Department is focusing its energy on highlighting the war veterans.

Labor organizations and the Party are conducting a variety of events such as, “Presentation of medals and certificates,” “Lectures by war veterans,” “Visiting elderly veterans,” “Storytelling sessions regarding the war of liberation for fatherland,” “Celebratory shows for war veterans,” etc.

Rodong Party formed a policy to invite all war veterans who want to participate in the “70th Victory Day Celebration” to be held in Pyongyang and set up special railroad cars for them. The Party also directed local branches to provide special treatments for those who cannot travel due to health reasons.

Committees from Rodong Party and People’s Army in provinces and cities are conducting health examinations for the veterans and presenting them with Kim Jong-un’s invitation to the celebration, congratulatory letters, honorary military uniforms, and summer clothing.

Freedom Chosun sources have met a number of war veterans and found that many vets openly pleaded with Party officials to “help me with rice and food instead of medals and order of merit.”
