Freedom Chosun, with the help of National Association of North Korean Defectors (a group composed of human rights organizations), obtained a list of individuals that were forcibly repatriated to North Korea against their will.

This list consists of 74 North Korean defectors who have acquired South Korean citizenship following their escape from North Korea.

Mr. Kim Sung-guk (pictured above in his ID card) entered South Korea in February 2004. He received his South Korean citizenship. According to his relatives, last time they saw him was when he left for China from Incheon Airport on October 10, 2006.

According to his friends who traveled with him, “The Chinese security officers trailed him from Yanji airport. When he went outside the city area, they dispatched armed special security unit and made an emergency arrest. The security unit included a North Korean security agent as well.

Kim showed them his South Korean passport and resisted arrest. The armed security officer shot him in the stomach area and tied his hands and feet with rope and loaded him into a car. [We heard] they drove him to NamHyang customs station and turned him over to the North Korean authorities the same day.”

According to defectors who used to live in Musan, “Kim Sung-guk died three days after he was handed over at NamHyang customs station.

The security agency in Musan informed his parents (Musan residents) that he was dead, that was all. They didn’t hand over his corpse.”

Mr. Ham Sung-chan, defector from ChongJin, met the same fate in February 2017. The Chinese security agents arrested him and handed Him over to North Korean security agency. He was found incarcerated at ChongJin detention facility. His son, who lives in South Korea, does not know whether his father is dead or alive.

The 74 defectors, South Korean citizens, have been missing for years, and their relatives believe that the Chinese security agency arrested the majority of them and handed them over to North Korean security agency like Mr. Kim and Mr. Ham’s case.
