The Chinese government, holding about 2,000 North Korean refugees in
prisons in northeast China shipped 600 refugees back to North Korea
on October 9, 2023.
Ms. Kim Sun-hyang [photographed above], mother of two, is one of the
refugees waiting to be shipped to North Korea.
Ms. Kim crossed the Apnok River into China from Hyesan, a border town
on North Korean side, in March 2016. She intended to join her aunt in
South Korea. She never made it to South Korea.
Her handler, who turned out to be a human trafficker, sold Ms. Kim to a
Chinese family, forcing her into an unwanted marriage. Subsequently,
she gave birth to two children. She made a living by smuggling goods
from North Korea.
May last year, she was in Dandong, China, taking delivery of smuggled
Items from North Korea. There, she was caught by the Chinese police for
violating the COVID Quarantine Act, the rules that were in place to control
the border closure.
Hence, Ms. Kim was sentenced to one year of hard labor. Her Chinese
in-laws helped her with food and medicine while she was doing hard labor.
Come early October, Ms. Kim and 350 North Korean refugees were taken
from her labor camp to the repatriation station. Over half of them were
among the 600 shipped to North Korea on October 9th.
The repatriation station does not allow food or medicine from outside.
According to the inside source for Freedom Chosun, the Chinese authorities
are preparing to repatriate the second group of North Korean refugees
any day now.
